Lessons In The Valleys: The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death - Part One

Lessons In The Valleys: The Valley Of The Shadow Of Death Part One Before he was a king, David was a shepherd. He knew all the responsibilities and requirements of a shepherd. He knew how to care for and protect his own sheep. As a believer, he knew the contentment and satisfaction of being one of the Lord's sheep. The Lord was David's Shepherd. Like an earthly shepherd cares for his sheep in all ways - feeding, watering, leading, protecting from the dangers of the wild, nurturing - so too does the Lord God care for His sheep. Psalms 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In order for the Lord to be your Shepherd, you must be one of His sheep. Has there ever been a time and place in your life when you have repented of your sin (turned from sin in your heart, turned from going your way) and turned to the Saviour to save you? The Bible teaches in Leviticus 17:11, that the blood of an animal sacrifice must be shed to cover our sins, "for it is the b...

A Psalm Of Guidance (Psalm 25) - Part One

A Psalm Of Guidance (Psalm 25) - Part One This is the first of seven Acrostic Psalms (see also Psalms 34, 37, 111, 112, 119, and 145), where each verse (or each section of eight verses in the case of Psalm 119) begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Psalms 25:1 A Psalm of David. Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. The Bible, especially the Old Testament, refers to various people lifting up their hands, their eyes, their voices, but here we have the Psalmist lifting up his soul to the Lord. Instead of choosing to focus on the vain things of this world (see Psalm 24:4), David resolved to focus only on the Lord. Truly, that is the secret of finding out God's will for your life – having a heart and soul focused steadfastly on the Lord. “With poetic passion, David cried out to God how that he laid his very soul before the Lord. Truly, this is fervent prayer. His heart was bared. His soul was offered up in prayer to God. God pays heed to such prayer.” (David Sorenso...

God's Word Is Forever

God's Word Is Forever By way of introduction, I want to use the following quote from Matthew Henry's Whole Bible Commentary regarding the definitions of the words used in reference to the Word of God in Psalm 119. I have bolded the ones I will specifically refer to in the study that follows: "There are ten different words by which divine revelation is called in this psalm, and they are synonymous, each of them expressive of the whole compass of it (both that which tells us what God expects from us and that which tells us that we may expect from him) and of the system of religion which is founded upon it and guided by it. The things contained in the scripture, and drawn from it, are here called, 1. God's law, because they are enacted by him as our Sovereign. 2. His way, because they are the rule both of his providence and of our obedience. 3. His testimonies, because they are solemnly declared to the world and attested beyond contradiction. 4. His commandments, beca...

Day Ten - Grace To Fret Not

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day Ten - Grace To Fret Not Psalm 37:1-2 (A Psalm of David.) Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. I found myself in a situation recently where some money that was owed me did not come in when I was expecting it - and when I figured I needed it to pay a bill. Because of that, I started complaining and stewing - I started fretting about the money and the person. Then the Holy Spirit pricked my conscience and showed me exactly what I was doing. He brought Psalm 37 to mind, and there I found five commands to do good instead of fretting. Five is typical of God's grace. Often we think of grace that is necessary for salvation - and forget that grace is so needful for service, for walking with the Lord everyday! Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungo...

Day Eight - The Lord's Eight Provisions

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day Eight - The Lord's Eight Provisions Psalm 121:1-8, [A Song of degrees.] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. (1) My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. (2) He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.(3) Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (4) The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. (5) The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. (6) The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. (7) The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. (8 ) Although I have done a devotional on this Psalm in the past, the Lord laid it on my heart again this morning. As I read through it, I saw it in a different light. I noticed there were eight promises given to us. God is so Good, isn't He? Let's look at the eight promises of Psal...
