Numbers In The Bible Series:
Day 35 - Jesus' I Am Statements - Part Two
V.) The Nine Compound Names Of God In The Old Testament:
The nine compound names and their translations into English are as follows:
1) Jehovah-Jireh, The LORD my Provider
Genesis 22:13-14 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
I love this name in the Bible - it is the first of these compound names that is presented to us, and is in fact the most important (or at least the foundational one). The LORD has seen our greatest need and has provided for it: our need of salvation. Jesus, the Son of God, was the Lamb of God that took away our sins on Calvary. It is interesting to note that Moriah, where Abraham offered Isaac, means "The LORD has seen," and it truly was on that mountain that the LORD provided for our greatest need - as Calvary/Golgotha is part of the range of the mountains of Moriah.
Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
The LORD has already met our greatest need in providing salvation; if you have trusted in Jesus and received His free gift of eternal life, then He also promises to meet all your other needs as you walk with Him.
For a more indepth look at Genesis 22, see this study: Abraham Offered Isaac.
2) Jehovah-Rapha, The LORD my Healer
Exodus 15:26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
It is the LORD that heals our diseases. He is the Great Physician. He provided healing for our greatest disease, that of our sin, through His death upon the cross:
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
He is able to heal our backslidings:
Hosea 14:4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.
He doesn't just slap a bandaid on our sin, but He removes it completely. He heals the underlying problem - and restores us completely to Him when we repent and confess our waywardness to Him.
He is also able to heal any other sicknesses or diseases that we may be afflicted with in our life - according to His perfect will. Sometimes it is not His will to heal believers down here, but rather to heal them by taking them home to Heaven, where they will have all trace of sin and sickness removed forever.
Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
3) Jehovah-Nissi, The LORD is my Banner
Exodus 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
The LORD is the one that we are to rally around, and He is the one that gives us victory in the spiritual battles we face.
For more on this theme, see His Banner Over Me Was Love.
4) Jehovah-Qadash, The LORD thy Sanctifier
Exodus 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
It is the LORD that sanctifies us, that set us apart for His use and for His glory.
John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
There are two parts of sanctification:
a) Being set apart for God at salvation - our Standing (this is eternal):
1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
Hebrews 10:10, 14 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all... For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Hebrews 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
b) Being set apart from the world in our daily walk with the LORD - our State:
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Ephesians 5:25-26 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
1 Thessalonians 4:4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
2 Timothy 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
While it may seem that our daily sanctification seems to be ever-changing (ie. sometimes we struggle and allow things into our lives that hinder our walks, and other times we make choices that strengthen them), the LORD will one day finish the work that He has started in us:
1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5) Jehovah-Shalom, The LORD our Peace
Judges 6:23-24 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
The LORD Jesus Christ is our peace - through faith in Him, we have peace with God the Father; through steadfastly walking with Him, we have peace in our trials, peace of mind and heart - regardless of the storms raging around us!
Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Isaiah 26:3-4 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
6) Jehovah-Raah, The LORD my Shepherd
Psalms 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
It is the LORD Himself who is the Shepherd of His sheep - He is the one who is responsible for leading them, providing for them, protecting them, etc. Sis Kate has done a wonderful study on The Nine Cares Of A Shepherd, so I won't duplicate her devotional, but I would encourage you to read it for yourself. It is a tremendous blessing.
It is interesting to note the following seven-fold comparison between Psalms 22, 23, and 24 and their New Testament parallels. (Adapted from J. Vernon McGee's comments from Thru The Bible on Psalm 23, where he lists six comparisons between what is often referred to as "The Shepherd Psalms." I am unsure where the seventh point came from.)

7) Jehovah-Sabaoth, The LORD of Hosts
Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
The LORD is the one who commands the army of Heaven - the angelic army made up of the holy angels. He is also the one who commands Israel's armies too. This name (or variants of it) shows up at least 235 times in the Old Testament! It is also referred to twice in the New Testament:
Romans 9:29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
James 5:4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
The LORD is the one who fights the wars for His people, He is the one who gives them deliverance from their enemies, and as James reveals above, He is also the one who rights the wrongs His people have suffered throughout history by their oppressors. He is definitely someone you want on your side! Or to put it more Biblically, His is the side you want to be on!
Exodus 32:26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
Joshua 5:13-15 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
This Captain of the LORD's host is Jesus. He has already overcome the world - and promises victory to all those who trust in Him! Are you walking in light of that victory today?
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
8) Jehovah-Tsidkenu, The LORD our Righteousness
Jeremiah 23:5-6 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Our righteousnesses are as filthy rags in the sight of God. We have no righteousness of our own, except for our self-righteousness, which is an offense to a righteous, holy God.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
But in the LORD Jesus Christ, we have that perfect righteousness that is acceptable toward God - the righteousness of the LORD Jesus Christ Himself credited to our account:
Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Romans 3:21-26 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Romans 4:3-6 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Romans 5:17-19 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Romans 9:30-33 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Romans 10:1-4 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Revelation 19:7-8 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
9) Jehovah-Shammah, The LORD Is There (ie. Present)
Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.
During the Millenium, Jerusalem will be known as The LORD is there - a name significant because of the reality behind it! The Lord will dwell among His people during His millenial reign - and during eternity:
Revelation 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Revelation 21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
Revelation 22:3-5 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
But we don't need to wait until Jesus' 1000 year reign to have Him dwelling in our midst:
Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Where true believers are gathered together in His name, the LORD is there! One of His names, after all, is Immanuel, God with us!
10) Jesus, The LORD Our Salvation
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
The name Jesus is the equivalent of the Old Testament name, Joshua (who in many ways was a type of Christ). The LORD our salvation. It is noteworthy that this is essentially the tenth compound name of the LORD God - 10 being typical of the whole world. Jesus IS the Saviour of the whole world, the Saviour FOR the whole world. Faith in Him is the only means of salvation, and He is the only Saviour, as many passages throughout the Bible testify.
1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 Timothy 2:3-6 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
In four different time periods, we find the names of our Saviour capitalized in our King James Bibles:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS - Declared in OT prophecy: used in Jeremiah 23:6.
JESUS - Declared at His birth: used in Matthew 1:21, 25; Luke 1:31; 2:21.
JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS - Declared at His crucifixion: in Matthew 27:37 and John 19:19.
KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS - Declared at His triumphant return: used in Revelation 19:16.
Truly, He is the LORD our righteousness, He is our Saviour, He is our King!
Whatever need we face in this life, the LORD will see it and provide it for those who trust in Him for salvation, and walk with Him day by day. Our Shepherd will heal us, sanctify us, and give us His peace. Jesus is our banner, and our LORD of hosts fighting our battles. He is always with us!
Truly, this study puts me on shouting ground!
Psalms 98:4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
