Praise God

Praise God It is Thanksgiving Day here is Canada (where I am from), and I thought it would be beneficial to post some of my favourite verses on giving of thanks or praising God. I had posted Psalm 100 in my Devotional on Sevens In Scripture (rewritten a couple of years later as Sevenfold Praise Part One and Sevenfold Praise Part Two ), and have decided to include those observations here as well: Psalms 100:1-5 A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before His presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations. Seven Ways to Praise God: 1. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. 2. Serve the LORD with gladness:...

The Song Of The Redeemed

The Song Of The Redeemed I like it when something in a passage gets explained and it opens up. I’m sure I knew some of this before (though this old brain gets forgetful), but it struck me more today. Rahab , when used as a symbol through the Old Testament, refers to Egypt. Now read this: Isaiah 51:9-10 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? God defeated Egypt and made it so His people - the redeemed - could pass over the Red Sea to go to the Promised Land/Jerusalem (well, what would one day be called Jerusalem/Mount Zion). Now read the next verse which most of us probably know as a song. Literally, it refers to the nation of Israel; spiritually it applies to all God's people being delivered from their old maste...

Conquering The Canaanites In Your Life

Conquering The Canaanites In Your Life Several years ago, I did a two-part study on what the Bible says about Rest. The first part was And I Will Give You Rest (The Rest Of Salvation) , and the second part was Rest For Your Souls (The Rest Of Victory In Christ) . In the second study, which I would encourage you to read prior to reading this one (as it builds upon what was presented there), I showed how the Israelites conquering the Canaanites in the Promised Land picture the Christian overcoming spiritually, conquering the sins in their life, through faith. This morning, with that mindset, I was reading some of the book of Deuteronomy, and more things fell into place on this theme and picture Deuteronomy 3:27-28 Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan. But charge Joshua , and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this pe...

The Armour Of Light

The Armour Of Light The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Romans 13:12 Ephesians 6:10-12 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. This passage is a very familiar one to most Christians, one that many keep coming back to over and over again to help them fight their daily spiritual battles. I have written several studies on the various components of the armour, so I won't list them again here, but I wanted to bring out a few newer points that I have been pondering on. Whose armour is it? The Lord's. Whose strength and might do we go in? Christ's. The word power in verse 10 is St...

Is Your Amour On?

To hear an adapted version of this study combined with The Armour Of God study preached in 2023, please click on the link below: Is Your Armour On? Sermon Is Your Armour On? So many Christians are concerned about wearing the armour of God (and rightly so), but there is so much unbiblical nonsense going around that it is rather disturbing. There is some truth and so much error taught in this area that many people will either get caught up in the false teachings and philosophies or avoid the issue altogether. This study will not be dealing with the whole armour (I have already written a study on that - The Armour Of God ), but will be dealing with one essential part that so many neglect. Ephesians 6:11-13 states: Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Whe...

Three Avenues Of Temptation

Three Avenues Of Temptation 1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. In this passage we see Satan's three main avenues of temptation: 1. The lust of the eyes - means forbidden longing or desire, covetousness, following after the sight of the eyes. 2. The lust of the flesh - means carnal desires, fulfilling the appetites of the flesh; fulfilling physical appetites outside of the will of God. 3. The pride of life - means selfishness, self-seeking; self-advancement. pride = (Strong's #213) boasting, bragging, (by implication) self-confidence. life = bios, physical life (as opposed to spiritual life, zoe). Contrast the pride of life w...

Our Walk In Ephesians - Part Three

Our Walk In Ephesians - Part Three In this section of the book of Ephesians, we are challenged to live differently, in a worthy manner, and shown how we are equipped to do so. 3) Walking Worthy Of Our Calling Chapter four of Ephesians starts off with "therefore", pointing back to the previous chapters, the three chapters where the Apostle Paul laid the doctrinal foundation that we are to build our spiritual walks upon. We are shown where we came from, how we are given an inheritance and victory through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, then chapter three ends with this wonderful prayer of Paul's: Ephesians 3:14-19 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to compreh...

Running The Race Of The Christian Life

Running The Race Of The Christian Life The Bible uses different metaphores to describe the Christian, such as a farmer, a workman, a soldier, a wrestler, etc. One of my favourite is that of a believer being pictured as a runner in a race, the race of the Christian life. Note that the race is for believers, and they are running against themselves to determine their rewards - it is not a race to determine whether someone will get to Heaven or not. That is determined on what you do with the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. If there was a time and place when you turned from your sin and turned to Jesus Christ to save you from your sins, believing in your heart that He is the only Saviour and that He paid the complete penalty for your sins when He died on the cross, then at that moment you entered into this race. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temp...

Lessons In The Valleys: The Lily Of The Valleys

Lessons In The Valleys: The Lily Of The Valleys I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. Song of Solomon 2:1 Jesus Christ here identifies Himself as the rarest and most beautiful of flowers, the rose of Sharon . Red in the Bible typically pictures sacrifice and shed blood. Jesus was our sacrifice and shed His blood for our sins on the cross of Calvary. This makes Him the most beautiful of Saviours. Yea, He is altogether lovely! (See Song of Solomon 5:16) Isaiah 33:17 Thine eyes shall see the King in His beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off. "'Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report,' all are to be found stored up in our Well-beloved. Whatever there may be of beauty in the material world, Jesus Christ possesses all that in the spiritual world, only in a tenfold multiplication. He is infinitely more beau...
