What God Cannot Do

What God Cannot Do It is true that "There is nothing too great for God's power"; and it is just as true that "There is nothing too small for His love!" I love the statement quoted above - it is truly fitting in light of what I believe the Lord wants me to preach on this Friday: What God Cannot Do When I think of this theme I am reminded of a question posed to me as a young believer. Often when witnessing to unbelievers, the atheists and the scoffers will try to come up with questions to try to stump the Christian - thinking in some sense that if the young believer cannot answer the foolish question then they are somehow justified in their rebellious course. I was asked if there was anything that God cannot do? Of course, I protested that there wasn't. Then the mocker asked me, "Can God create a rock so heavy that He cannot move it?" Not sure how to answer that - as it seemed a catch-22 question. Either way I answered seemed to prove God was limited...

What Is Your Name? Sermon

(To hear the audio of this sermon preached in church, please click on the title below) What Is Your Name? Proverbs 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell? 1. God’s Names: A name in the Bible is who a person is, what they represent, basically their character. Every time God revealed a new name to His people, He was showing them more of what He could do in their lives. He was showing them who He was, and what He could do for His people, in them, and through them. One of my favourite passages in the New Testament is: Romans 5:3-5 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is giv...

Who I Am

Who I Am This study builds a little on the themes covered in these two studies: The Giver, Or The Gifts? and Blessed Contrasts In Scripture Please read these two studies for more Scripture references on some of these points below. Many before the time of Christ were waiting for the Messianic kingdom to right the wrongs in this world (grievances, violence, wrong judgment, sin - Hab 1:3-4, 13; 2:2-3). They were looking for a time (ie. an event ) when a King would rule over the earth and restore order (in fulfillment of the “vision”, ie. of the Old Testament prophecies) – Jesus directs us to Himself . Hebrews 10:38. Many of the Jews in the time of Christ were looking for a political and social Messiah. Many rejected Christ because when He came the first time, He was not here to right all the political or social wrongs, but to deal with our sins. He did not come as “King” (though He is the King of kings and Lord of lords, and will come back one day to reign), but as Saviour. Some follow...

What Is His Name?

What Is His Name? 1) Genesis 32:24-31 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. The Angel of the Lord was a pre-incarnate appearance of th...

Day 56 - Be Ye Holy

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day 56 - Be Ye Holy A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. (Psa 68:5) Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. (Psa 150:1) Is there anything as magnificent in God's creation than mountains? When I behold pictures such as these, I stand in awe of the Creator! I am reminded of His might, His love, and His holiness. As I meditated on this today, I was deeply impressed about how God wants us to be holy like Him. I searched the Scriptures for the phrase, be ye holy , and discovered it appears three times! Praise His Holy Name! The number three symbolizes the godhead, the Three-in-One, the Triune God! Holiness is complete in the godhead! Let's look at the verses together. I was blessed beyond measure when I discovered the numbers within the numbers themselves! 1. LORD - Jehovah : Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. (Lev 2...

Day 55 - Behold: A Fivefold Picture - Part Two

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day 55 - Behold: A Fivefold Picture - Part Two I want to build upon something that was presented in Part One of this study. It is interesting to note how the cherubim in the Old Testament are a type of Christ. They each have four faces, and each face represents one Gospel: A) Matthew, the Lion, presents Jesus as the King, dealing with the Kingdom of God and with His authority. This Gospel is written primarily for the Jews and deals more with that nation and focusses more on the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy than the other Gospels. It is in this Gospel that we find more references to Jesus being the Son of David, the King that is to reign. Here we find Jesus being referred to as the Son of Man (ie. the Messiah) - in contexts that are more reflective of His power (eg. His returning in glory and reigning, His charge over angels). Matthew 26:64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitt...

Day 53 - Behold: A Fivefold Picture - Part One

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day 53 - Behold: A Fivefold Picture - Part One In the whole Bible, there are 1275 verses that contain the word behold - yet among all these there are only five specific statements that tell us to behold the person or character of the Saviour, the Messiah that was prophesied in the Old Testament and clearly portrayed in the New Testament. There are five profound statements about the Lord Jesus Christ. Often the word behold has a comma after it, indicating that the author of that book wants us to pay attention and hearken to what is being said - Behold , I have something to tell you; or Behold , consider this. But these five statements are different. 1) Behold The Lamb Of God. John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God , which taketh away the sin of the world. John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! The Messiah that would come and take away the sins of the world is the ce...

Day 37 - The Seven Depictions of Christ in Revelation

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day 37 - The Seven Depictions of Christ in Revelation Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Rev 3:20) I find the studies on the number seven to have been my biggest blessing thus far. I was looking at the seven churches in Revelation and reflected on how each referenced "saith he" and just who that "he" was. We all know that He is Christ. However, the characteristics used to depict Christ are awesome! 1. Jesus holds His messengers in His right hand and walks in the midst of the church . Rev 2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; The seven stars are the angels, the messengers. It is thought that these messengers are the pastors of the seven churches (the candlesticks). It is interesting that...

Day 35 - Jesus' I Am Statements - Part Two

Numbers In The Bible Series: Day 35 - Jesus' I Am Statements - Part Two V.) The Nine Compound Names Of God In The Old Testament: The nine compound names and their translations into English are as follows: 1) Jehovah-Jireh, The LORD my Provider Genesis 22:13-14 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh : as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. I love this name in the Bible - it is the first of these compound names that is presented to us, and is in fact the most important (or at least the foundational one). The LORD has seen our greatest need and has provided for it: our need of salvation. Jesus, the Son of God,...
