The Sevenfold Holy Spirit

The Sevenfold Holy Spirit

1) The name Holy Spirit is used seven times in the Bible:

A. Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

B. Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

C. Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

D. Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

E. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

F. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

G. 1 Thessalonians 4:8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

2) The sevenfold nature of the Holy Spirit:

Isaiah 11:2

1) And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,

2) the spirit of wisdom

3) and understanding,

4) the spirit of counsel

5) and might,

6) the spirit of knowledge

7) and of the fear of the LORD;

The sevenfold nature of the Holy Spirit.

3) The seven Spirits of God is a symbolic name for the Holy Spirit used in the book of Revelation:

This is a symbolic allusion to Isaiah 11:2.

Revelation 1:4-5 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Notice the Trinity is portrayed in the above passage:

The Father - from him which is, and which was, and which is to come (this name is also used for Jesus in Revelation 1:8).

The Holy Spirit - and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne.

The Son of God - And from Jesus Christ.

Revelation 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Revelation 4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

Notice Jesus Christ is declared as all-powerful (omnipotent, seven horns which represent all power), all-knowing (omniscient, seven eyes representing having all wisdom), and present everywhere (omnipresent, seven Spirits sent forth into all the earth). This verse is declaring that Jesus is God - but it is also showing that everything He does is through the power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit. We see this pattern in His earthly ministry. See Isaiah 11:2; 42:1 and John 1:32; 3:34.

4) The word “comforter” is used in seven verses in the Bible:

A. Ecclesiastes 4:1 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

B. Lamentations 1:9 Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself.

C. Lamentations 1:16 For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

D. John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

E. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

F. John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

G. John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Altogether, this name or term is used 8 times in seven verses. In the three Old Testament verses, it is stated that those who were oppressed or afflicted had no comforter. In the NT, the Holy Spirit is the Comforter, who came to indwell all believers after Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. Therefore, the Holy Spirit being given as the Comforter is a new beginning for the children of God.

5) The sevenfold ministry of the Holy Spirit:

John 16:13-14

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come,

1) he will guide you into all truth:

2) for he shall not speak of himself;

3) but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak:

4) and he will shew you things to come.

5) He shall glorify me:

6) for he shall receive of mine,

7) and shall shew it unto you.

6) The Holy Spirit pictured as a dove, bringing peace between man and God:

In several places in the Bible, the Holy Spirit is pictured as a dove, bringing peace to man through the offering of Jesus Christ on the cross.

John 1:32-34 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

Luke 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Genesis 8:9-12 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark. And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.

The olive leaf in the mouth of the dove indicated that the wrath of God on sin was over (ie. the flood had abated), and those that were in the ark (which is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ) were safe from His wrath forevermore. God's anger and wrath is over for the believer as the Beloved Son has borne it all in his place. It is finished!

Song of Songs 2:11-14 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.

The winter of God's judgement is past, the rain of the flood is over and gone! The voice of the turtle dove is heard in the land - in our hearts, through the Word of God - because we are hidden in the cleft of the Rock!

Here are two more verses on this theme. Consider how we are becoming more Christlike as we walk with Jesus day by day:

The believer - Song of Songs 1:15 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes.

Jesus Himself - Song of Songs 5:12 His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.

Are you more like your Saviour than you used to be? Are you looking at the world through God's eyes - through the eyes of the Holy Spirit?

7) The blood and oil were sprinkled seven times on the believers:

Leviticus 8:10-12 And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them. And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them. And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

Leviticus 14:14-18 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot: And the priest shall take some of the log of oil, and pour it into the palm of his own left hand: And the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand, and shall sprinkle of the oil with his finger seven times before the LORD: And of the rest of the oil that is in his hand shall the priest put upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the trespass offering: And the remnant of the oil that is in the priest's hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed: and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD.

It is interesting to note that the priests were to be sprinkled with the blood, then the oil. The blood representing our redemption in Christ - through His precious blood shed upon the cross - was applied to their right ears, their right thumbs, and their right feet. That signifies the believer being sanctified (set apart) by the blood of Christ, and his ear being opened to hear the Word of God, his hands being set apart to do the will of God, and his feet being set apart to walk in His way. Likewise, the believer was then anointed by the Holy Spirit, represented by the olive oil.

The oil could not be applied before the blood of the trespass offering - it could only be put where the blood had already been applied, signifying the Holy Spirit cannot indwell someone until the sinner accepts Jesus Christ as their Saviour. The Holy Spirit could only go where the blood had already been applied.
